Skype - Is it that good or just cheap?

General

We here at phoneid.org are all for cheaper calls. All of the team have had some of the largest mobile phone bills known to man over the years, costs that we and I expect you can do without! So what do we do? Do we simply not call each other, SMS or try and find mobile operators with vast Free SMS or off peak minute tariffs? This might be an option, but sure enough, we’ve all tried these and we all find that texts aren’t always practical and neither is calling after 7pm.

So… what are our alternatives? The one that immediately comes to mind is Skype. If you’re not familiar with Skype, you should be. For those readers not in the know, Skype is a piece of software that allows users to make telephone calls via the Internet. Skype is cross-platform software that makes use of VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol technology.

Safe in the knowledge that all of my visitors now know what Skype is (hopefully), I have to ask, is it really worth it? Sure, we can save a lot of money using Skype but is it actually good enough? I have had numerous people put the phone down on me as a result of the call quality being low (admittedly this was in the early days) but still, can it equal the call quality of a land line to land line call? We here at Phone ID don’t think so. With that said, Skype to Skype calls are free, so if you just want to sit speaking for hours on end to your girlfriend on the other side of the world, it’ll suit you perfect. It also has a nice instant messaging application to keep you entertained whilst the call quality increases.
